G-60, a group of opposition lawmakers in the House of Representatives, has expressed concern about an alleged move by Pro-Wike former LG Chairmen to freeze local government allocations via exparte order.
The lawmakers, who made this known in a statement signed by their spokesperson, Hon Ikenga Ugochinyere, stated that they received credible intelligence that some of the former local government chairmen in Rivers, whose tenures have expired, and their financiers are seeking an injunction from a federal high court to seize the local government’s allocation as a result of their failed attempt to retain power after their tenures have expired.
As a result, they urged the Chief Judge of the Federal High Court and judges of the State High Court to exercise extreme caution and put their divisions on alert so that they are not used to issuing export applications to people who are no longer elected as local government chairmen.
The lawmakers stated, “We received credible intelligence that some of the former local government chairmen in Rivers, whose tenures have expired, and their financiers are looking for a federal high court to grant them an injunction that will seize the local government’s allocation as a result of their failed attempt to retain power after their tenure expired.
“I would like to take this opportunity to call on the Chief Judge of the Federal High Court and judges of the State High Court; you never know when they will go to Zamfara, Ogoja, or anywhere. I would like to ask them to be very careful and put their divisions on alert, so they do not get used to issuing export applications to people who are no longer elected local government chairmen.
“There is nothing like tenure extension in a democratic setting; it is akin to a coup over constitutional governance. So we want to alert the general public that there is a move to pick exparte applications by these former local government chairmen whose tenures have expired to seize local government allocations, putting workers and rural development at risk.”
