Katsina PDP Erupts Into Crisis As Caretaker Committee Members Accuse Chairman, Others Of Sabotage
All is not well in the Katsina State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), which is currently in crisis, as members of the newly formed Caretaker Committee have accused the Chairman of the Committee and others of sabotage.
Recall that on April 17, 2027, the PDP’s national leadership formed a Caretaker Committee to oversee the party’s affairs at the state level.
The Committee Members disclosed that approximately 7,101 people who wanted to purchase the forms to participate in the upcoming congresses were denied access to do so.
Hon. Ibrahim Abdullahi Tafashiya, a member of the committee who led other Katsina stakeholders to Abuja, told reporters on Wednesday at the party’s national secretariat in Abuja that there is a schism between some of them as members of the Caretaker Committee and the Chairman, Alh. Musa A Karim, for reasons best known to him.
He stated, “The Katsina State PDP is in jeopardy due to the mismanagement of its affairs by this leadership. Since the party’s National Headquarters released the timetable and guidelines for the 2024 Ward, Local Government, and State congresses, certain proactive procedural measures should have been implemented to ensure the exercise’s success, but nothing has happened.
“Since the period preceding the 2023 general election, there has been division among the ranks of the party’s leadership and followership in Katsina State, and almost all of the 2023 Campaign Management Council, who work tirelessly during the campaign exercise, have been subjected to such maltreatment.
“And the Caretaker Committee Chairman, who chose to align himself with a specific interest group, did nothing to bridge the divides within the PDP in Katsina State.
“It is prudent for all of us to remember that the first activity preceding the party congress to elect party officials is always a membership drive and the updating of the membership register before the sale of forms, which was not done even at this time.
“These issues are specific to Katsina State’s 361 wards, 34 Local Governments, and 39 State Exco aspirants. We have gathered approximately 7,101 members who wish to purchase the forms to participate in the upcoming congresses, but they have been denied access to do so.”
The Committee members stated that they were informed at the party’s national headquarters that the Chairman of the Committee had taken the forms without their knowledge about three weeks ago.
“We arrived at the National Headquarters only to be informed that the forms were delivered to the Caretaker Committee Chairman about three weeks ago. We therefore request the intervention of the National Working Committee (NWC) to resolve the matter for the PDP’s progress, development, and success,” the Committee stated.
Narrating their experiences in attempting to purchase the forms, they stated, “As you may be aware, the sale of the forms is approaching, i.e. Wednesday, June 19, 2024. A delegation of aspirants from Katsina, Dutsinma, Malumfashi, Funtua, Mashi, Kankia, and Katsina Local Government Areas went to Katsina State PDP Headquarters to purchase forms but met a deserted Secretariat with no official of the party to attend to them and also held a press conference, where they gave a graphic account and declared in the media, on camera, how the entire State Caretaker Committee fled the Secretariat in their bid to hijack the forms
“While we were in Abuja at Wadata Plaza to purchase the Forms, we were unable to meet with anyone, so we had to write and forward our complaint to the appropriate party authorities so that proper action could be taken.”
They did, however, call on the National Working Committee (NWC) to intervene in the ugly development and save the party from crisis.
“We, therefore urge the Peoples Democratic Party’s National Working Committee (NWC) to take immediate drastic measures in addressing and/or resolving this crisis/complaint, as well as ensuring that due process is followed in the sale of forms, the general conduct of the upcoming congresses, and the general running of the party’s affairs for unity, peace, progress, and success. While thanking the National Working Committee (NWC) for carrying out their duties diligently for the PDP to propose. All we ask for is a level playing field’, they said.
