Obi And Enugu’s Defected Labour Members

Following the announced defection of some Labour Party members of the Enugu House of Assembly to the PDP, someone called to inquire about my thoughts. I told him I was not surprised and that more defections would occur. Personally, I anticipated it because principled politicians are rare in Nigeria. When they act stupidly, they mistake it for being intelligent and strategic. This is purely a character issue rather than a political one.

This situation is strikingly similar to what occurred in Anambra State. Many politicians overcame obstacles by joining forces with Mr Peter Obi. Obi’s influence enabled some to achieve what they would not have been able to achieve in multiple lifetimes otherwise. However, when it came time to show loyalty by backing Obi’s candidate, they plotted against him in the name of cleverness. Why couldn’t they put their ambitions aside for a moment and remember what Obi had done for them, while also supporting him? We did not witness that. When I think about this, I am perplexed by the true nature of man.

The foregoing occurred in Enugu State and is likely to happen elsewhere. Given the nature of man, I would not be surprised if it occurred in Anambra State. I would be surprised if this did not happen.

The most perplexing aspect is that Obi offered these politicians a wide range of support. I spoke with some of them, and they openly admitted that in their political careers, only Obi asked them to run and supported them without any conditions. This is in contrast to others, who cut deals, demand money, and even plan to share salaries.

Obi is unquestionably a unique politician, and we hope that his goodness, principled nature, and dedication to humanity will one day benefit this country.
