ICAN Applauds Gov Otti’s Exemplary Leadership, Transformation Of Abia
The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) has praised Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti for his outstanding leadership and commitment to the state’s transformation.
According to Kazie Uko, Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Governor Otti’s innovative initiatives, such as the recently inaugurated Geometric Power project, which promises reliable power supply, and numerous road rehabilitation and reconstruction across the State, have had a positive impact on the citizens.
The Institute announced its position on Tuesday, when the Governing Council paid a working visit to the Abia Governor at his home in Umuehim, Nvosi, Isialangwa South Local Government Area.
Dr. Innocent Okwuosa, President of ICAN, speaking through the Registrar and Chief Executive, Lanre Olasunkanmi, described Abia’s infrastructure upgrades as game changers that would benefit businesses and the state’s overall well-being.
“On behalf of the Governing Council and the Institute’s entire membership, Sir, we commend your government for its exemplary leadership and commitment to transformative change in Abia State through a variety of innovative initiatives.
“We applaud the launch of the Geometric Power Project in Aba, which promises reliable power supply, as well as ambitious road rehabilitation and construction projects.
“All of these developments are game changers for businesses and residents in the state’s commercial hub. “It gives us great pleasure at the Institute that Abia State residents are expressing gratitude for transformative initiatives that will not only improve transport but also positively impact economic activities and overall quality of life,” said the ICAN President.
While thanking Governor Otti for strategically appointing their members to various positions of trust, the Council also advocated for the inclusion of more chartered accountants in his administration as invaluable assets in increasing revenue generation, streamlining governance processes, and stimulating economic growth.
Governor Otti thanked the Institute for its visit, expressed his willingness to collaborate with ICAN, and encouraged them to continue adhering to accounting profession professionalism and ethical conduct principles.
The Governor, who reaffirmed his commitment to ethical governance, stated that his administration is very deliberate in developing programmes and policies aimed at the welfare of the people.
“I would like to assure you that we will continue to do the right thing. Only when you do the right thing can you go to bed and sleep with both eyes closed.
“We are very deliberate about our programming. Our programmes are designed to improve people’s lives.
“When we insist on paying salaries on the 28th of every month, as opposed to what used to happen here; when we are building roads, retrofitting hospitals and fixing our schools, we simply want life to be better for the ordinary person.
“When we insist on securing the state, we want people to be able to enter and exit freely. “We want to assure you that we will continue to provide people-oriented services,” Governor Otti stated.
He emphasised his administration’s commitment to salary and pension payments on time, infrastructure development, healthcare and education sector improvement, and job creation, among other priorities.
The Governor stated that the state was committed to facilitating business operations, which led to the establishment of a “Ease of Doing Business Agency” that would remove all roadblocks and improve a seamless process for entrepreneurs to establish their businesses in the state.
Governor Otti stated that his government would continue to encourage investments in Abia, assuring investors of a favourable business environment, while also urging ICAN members not to be hesitant in marketing Abia as an ideal investment destination.
The visit was highlighted by the presentation of the Institute’s incoming 60th President, Chief Davidson Alaribe, and the Governor’s invitation to the new president’s formal investiture ceremony on June 4 in Lagos.
The Council also took advantage of the opportunity to invite the Governor to speak as a keynote speaker at the upcoming 54th Annual Accountants Conference, which will be held in Abuja from October 7th to 11th, 2024. The Council believes that attendees will benefit greatly from Governor Otti’s leadership insights, governance, and economic policy.
The ICAN delegation, led by Mr. Chidi Ajaegbu, the Institute’s 50th President, included Prof. Kenneth Kalu, Secretary to the State Government; Mr. Philemon Ogbonna, Commissioner for Environment; and Dr. Njum Onyemenam, Accountant-General, all Fellows of the accounting body.
Prince Okey Kanu, Commissioner of Information and Culture, and Dr. Ngozi Okoronkwo, Commissioner of Health, were also in attendance.
