As Nigerian workers commemorate May Day, former Vice President Alhaji Atiku Abubakar has stated that the plight of workers remains dire because government corruption and inefficiency have persisted.
In a statement issued on May Day, he stated that despite the government’s lengthy promises and flowery words, the much-touted prospects of wage increases for Nigerian workers remain a mirage.

“As Nigerian workers join their counterparts around the world today to commemorate International Workers Day, it is a sobering reality that the Nigerian worker’s situation remains dire.

“Despite the government’s long-term promises and flowery words, the much-discussed prospect of wage increases for Nigerian workers remains a mirage. Every dawn brings new hardships and harsh living conditions.

“After the government’s contraction and contradictions about whether the subsidy regime has ended or is still in place, Nigerians are now frustrated as they waste valuable man-hours in queues at petrol stations across the country.

“The petrol subsidy has been purportedly eliminated, but its impact remains, revealing the current federal government’s incompetence.

“In an unprecedented move that is condescending to both Nigerian workers and the general public, the current federal government has announced the unilateral removal of Premium Motor Spirit subsidies without consulting with Nigerian worker representatives.

“Continued increases in tariffs for various service offerings without addressing system corruption and inefficiencies equates to long-suffering Nigerians subsidising system corruption and inefficiencies.”

“From the legendary Pa. Michael Imoudu to later-day firebrands such as Pascal Bafyau and Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, Nigerian workers have been at the forefront of the fight against tyranny and bad governance.

“This administration has trampled workers’ rights more than any other in our history. Workers face uncertainty daily as the prices of essential goods rise dramatically.

“The Nigerian worker has had it so rough under this current administration, and it is unfortunate that, while living conditions for Nigerian workers remain at a miserably low ebb, the Nigerian government continues to regale its international audiences with tales of how the masses are being weaned off their wasteful reliance on government.

“It is becoming clear that, in the eyes of the current federal government, managing our country’s microeconomic outlook is an unwieldy laboratory experiment in which the Nigerian worker is prostrate.

“While I cannot help but sympathise with the Nigerian worker for the way the current government has ridiculed her for far too long, I must also express my congratulations to the Nigerian worker on this year’s Workers Day.

“I hope that this year’s Labour Day theme, Ensuring Safety and Health at Work in a Changing Climate, will inspire the Nigerian government to prioritise the concerns of Nigerian workers.”
