Abdullah Shawesh, the Palestinian Ambassador to Nigeria, has chastised the United States for blocking his country’s application for full membership in the United Nations.

Shawesh called the excuse that Palestine’s full membership in the UN will impede the promoted two-state solution hypocritical.

The envoy, who spoke over the weekend, lamented that the US action was nothing more than tacit support for Israel’s ongoing attacks on Gaza.

Shawesh stated that the United States has vetoed a Palestinian request to the United Nations Security Council for full membership and to become the 194th member state of the United Nations.

The US stated that Palestine’s “full membership in the United Nations will not help in reaching a two-state solution to the Palestinian-Israeli conflict.” They not only reiterated their unfair position and fully supported the Israeli occupation, but they also saw the Israeli brutal occupation as just.

“The US is strongly opposed to Palestinian legitimate rights.”

He said, “The United States is the iron shield of the Israeli occupation.

“The United States opposes the Palestinians’ right to self-determination, which is a fundamental human right.

He claimed that “The United States is the largest sponsor of the Israeli occupation,” emphasising that “The US veto green light to the current Israeli genocide and entrenches the Israeli occupation.”

The envoy went on to say that the current carnage and genocide would not have happened without the United States’ full political complicity and unlimited military support.

“The US took the same Israeli political position as the Palestinian UN membership.”

Shawesh revealed that 34,183 Palestinians have been killed since the attacks began on October 7, 2023, with 77,143 injured, and 8,425 arrested, including 280 women, 540 children, 45 journalists, and 5,210 administrative detentions.

He did, however, explain that the casualty figure “does not include the Gazans who have been arrested and forcibly hidden.”
