Finidi George Appointed As New Head Coach For Super Eagles By NFF

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has appointed Finidi George, a former Super Eagles winger, as the head coach of the senior men’s national team.

The 52-year-old former Real Betis and Ajax Amsterdam attacker was given the new position after the NFF Board approved the Technical and Development Committee’s recommendation, according to a statement issued on Monday, April 29.

George, who served as José Santos Peseiro’s assistant for 20 months before the Portuguese resigned after finishing second in the Africa Cup of Nations in Cote d’Ivoire 2023, took charge of the squad in an interim capacity during two friendlies in Morocco last month.

George oversaw two friendly matches in Morocco last month, where the team won 2-1 against Ghana and lost 0-2 to Mali.

The statement read in part: “On Monday, the Nigeria Football Federation Board approved the recommendation of its Technical and Development Committee to appoint former ace winger Finidi George as Head Coach of the Senior Men’s National Football Team, Super Eagles.

“George, who worked as José Santos Peseiro’s assistant for 20 months before the Portuguese resigned after finishing second in the Africa Cup of Nations in Cote d’Ivoire in 2023, took charge of the squad in an interim capacity during two friendly matches in Morocco last month.

“His team defeated Ghana 2-1 in the first game, snapping an 18-year losing streak against the Black Stars, but then fell 0-2 to Mali in the second.

“George, a member of the so-called ‘Golden Generation’ that won the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations tournament in Tunisia and emerged as the second most entertaining team in Nigeria’s debut at the FIFA World Cup finals in the United States the same year, won 62 caps for Nigeria, including appearances in the 1994 and 1998 FIFA World Cup finals.

He also received gold, silver, and bronze medals at the 1992, 1994, 2000, and 2002 AFCON tournaments.”
