The leader of the Yoruba Self Determination Group, Professor Banji Akintoye, and the Yoruba Nation Activist, Chief Sunday Adeyemo, also known as Sunday Igboho, have distanced themselves from the group that invaded the Oyo State Government Secretariat in Agodi, Ibadan, on Saturday.

When contacted, the duo stated separately that they were unaware of the action and did not have the support of the individuals involved.

Professor Akintoye specifically identified Modupe Onitiri Abiola, one of the late MKO Abiola’s wives, as the brains behind the agitators.

He stated that the people involved are fighting against Yoruba interests rather than for them.

He stated that information available to him indicates that the group had previously appointed an interim government for the Yoruba Nation and chose to install it by hosting their flag and taking over the region’s government from the Oyo State secretariat, resulting in the deployment of their men in military camouflage.

Prof Akintoye stated, “I am not connected, have no contact, and know nothing about Dupe Onitiri and her group.” I am not sure what they are doing. I learned that they are engaging in some sort of insanity in Ibadan, but that is entirely them, and it has nothing to do with me or people like Chief Sunday Igboho who are working with me.

“We are the authentic Yoruba Nation Movement. We have no connection to or collaboration with any Fulani attempting to suppress the Yorubas in Nigeria. That is what Onitiri and those who support them, who we now know have been working with the Fulanis since the days of Babangida and Abacha, are doing.

“We are the people fighting for Youna Nation’s freedom, and we will win the war in a peaceful and orderly manner.

“They are not fighting for the Yoruba Nation, but rather against it. I was unaware of the situation in Ibadan until Chief Sunday Igboho informed me this morning. I am not part of it. They are not from us. They are followers of Onitiri. It is a lunatic fringe. We will not act in this way during this struggle.”

Also speaking, Sunday Igboho stated that he will never be involved in such madness, noting that whenever he wishes to engage in a struggle, he will always make it public and ensure that other stakeholders are included.

He said, “I know nothing about it. I am not even aware of who is behind it. If I do anything for the Yoruba Nation, whether it is early or late, you can be sure that we will notify everyone in advance.

“We will announce our plans, and all of our leaders and stakeholders will be involved and collaborate to make it a reality.

“So, anything they do now on their own, whether it is an attack on the government, a military barrack, or a police station, I have no knowledge of and am not involved in.
