The Abia State Commissioner of Police, CP Kenechukwu Onwumelie, has confirmed the arrest of two males in connection with the kidnapping of Prof. Godwin Emezue, Deputy Vice Chancellor of Abia State University (ABSU), Uturu, on January 26th.
Professor Godwin Emezue was kidnapped while purchasing fuel at a filling station in Umuopara, Umuahia South LGA, near his home.
The hoodlums stole his wife’s ATM card, dragged the Deputy Vice-Chancellor into a Lexus SUV and drove away with him.
The ABSU Deputy V.C. was eventually released by the kidnappers on Tuesday night, after spending 11 days in the kidnappers’ den.
According to CP Onwumelie, “They are in our custody, two of the people involved.” “The investigation is ongoing.”
Earlier on Friday night, while speaking with reporters, the state Governor, Dr Alex Otti, revealed the arrest, stating that the leader of the gang was apprehended at Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos while attempting to board a flight to Turkey and that the second mastermind was apprehended in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.
According to the Governor, the two have since been returned to Abia state to answer for their crimes, with the arrest made possible by the efforts of “Operation Crush,” a joint security team established by his administration that is yielding the desired results in catching criminals.
